Each stop, explained

Step 1
You write
편지를 씁니다
Write in the app: type your letter, or upload photos of handwritten pages. Family photos go inside the letter, between your paragraphs, at no extra cost.
One envelope can hold up to 3 documents and 40 pages.
No inmate number? That’s fine. Their full name, nationality and facility are enough; you choose the facility from a list.
Step 2
We print it and express-mail it

Before you pay, you see the exact pages we will print. Black and white is $20 per envelope; colour is $30.
We print on real paper, address the envelope to the facility and send it next business day by tracked express (익일특급). It arrives the business day after that.
The facility checks incoming mail before handing it over, so it is usually in their hands 3–5 business days after we send it. Post from abroad can take weeks.
Every envelope also carries a page of news in their language, and they can ask us anything: we answer their questions, print the song lyrics they ask for and translate Korean documents into their language (up to 10 pages per envelope). It is free and travels in your next envelope.
Step 3
They write back, free

Every envelope includes a cover page in their language: who the letter is from and how to write back. A page of cut-out address labels for our Seoul office comes with it.
Writing to us is free for them. They only need a stamp, and there is nothing to sign up for. Their reply travels within Korea only, so it never waits on international post.
Step 4
Their reply reaches you
도착 후 보통 3영업일 안에 스캔해 전해 드립니다
Their letter comes to our Seoul office. We scan it, usually within three working days of it arriving, and it appears in your inbox.
The paper original is destroyed after scanning. Then you write back, and the thread continues.
